“When you walk into CrossPurpose, it’s like a warm hug,” says participant Kristi Martinez. That feeling is the fabric of the organization, built on an awareness that it is a privilege to encounter people in some of the most uncertain and intimidating times of their lives. Whether it’s their first day in our program, a first counseling session, a first speaking engagement, or a first interview, we embrace the chance to walk with them through these important moments that will later define their path out of poverty, toward prosperity.

And we are only able to pour into the people we serve because of the foundation of love and care that is poured into us, the staff, through a variety of intentional and exceptional facets of our culture. These are the reasons CrossPurpose was voted one of the “Best Places to Work” by the Denver Business Journal for a sixth consecutive year. From benefits to impact, we’ve narrowed down the top six things we hear our employees say most often through our Slack channels, at company functions, and in the hallways.

1. Generous Time-Off That Actually Restores

Paid time off is given generously and with accountability—leadership actively checks to ensure you’re using every hour given and will remove barriers to help make it happen. In addition to standard vacation packages, the staff enjoys creative additions like expanded holidays, turning three-day weekends into four-day weekends for deeper rest. Two “Days of Solitude” each year allow staff to take off a workday for personal and spiritual reset.

On our recent Day of Solitude, staff gathered for breakfast, prayer, and worship before heading out to seek spiritual respite. Some embraced a silent retreat, others hiked or visited local gardens, and all reflected on their relationship with God.

I’m so grateful that CrossPurpose gives us this day and encouragement to do this. The gorgeous weather, beauty of nature, and cathedral bells were a bonus and a refreshment to my soul.” –Danielle Patridge, Counseling

2. Genuine Love for People

CrossPurpose cares for each individual as a person, not just an employee. Our core values speak to what it means to genuinely love others as Jesus did—deeply, without judgment, and across cultural divides. Because we believe that no significant change happens without significant relationships, we create spaces where employees can build belonging, empathy, harmony, and connection with each other. From annual retreats that reinforce our shared mission, to quarterly “fiestas” that build camaraderie, to shout-outs at weekly staff meetings, we have regular opportunities to share recognition and gratitude for each other, our leadership, our partners, and the people we serve.

“I was moved to tears on many occasions, not only by the stories told, but also by the palpable love that was present among the staff, community partners, and all the participants. I think that’s what it feels like to be embraced by people who know how to build and hold community. Thank you for bringing us into the important work you do.” –Jill Hawley, Gary Community Ventures

3. Tangible Impact on Denver

CrossPurpose offers what no other organization in Denver does—access to the opportunities, skills training, job networks, and holistic support that can help people move out of poverty and build generational wealth. Since we started in 2012, we’ve walked with more than 8,600 people on their journey out of poverty, and they have since generated $155 million in earnings. This is impact that lasts, breaking generational cycles of poverty for good. Employees aren’t just coming to work—they’re helping lives change right in front of their eyes, in their neighborhoods, and throughout the city.

“It was an honor to stand as a finalist for the Colorado Nonprofits to Know award alongside so many impactful organizations in our community. This recognition reflects the collective impact of this team and the work happening across every part of the organization.” –Steve Steele, Central Services

4. Faith-Filled Workplace

We have created an environment where employees can authentically live out their faith through their work. As a Christian organization, we promote rhythms and conversations that will help our team flourish spiritually, including:

-Daily staff prayer, which offers a quick break to celebrate God’s word
-Bi-weekly chapel gatherings, where we reflect on ways that God’s teachings influence our work and our communities
-A staff pastor who is available to provide spiritual care and personal support to all team members

“I’ve been part of organizations that identified as ‘Christian,’ but where the culture and care for employees didn’t always reflect that. What stands out here is the consistency, how we show up not only for those we serve, but for one another. That kind of mutual respect and care is rare, and it’s something I deeply appreciate.” -Andrea Vega, Development

5. Commitment to Diversity

Just as we serve a diverse community across Denver, we are intentional about building a team that reflects a range of backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. Every new employee participates in Culture Club during their first year, engaging in monthly conversations around topics like bias, conflict, and understanding differences. We also host city tours for staff, donors, and partners to explore the complex history of poverty in Denver—offering a fuller picture of the systems, stories, and perspectives that shape our city today. Fifteen CrossPurpose employees are graduates of our programs who add valuable perspectives to inform the company’s future. This commitment strengthens how we show up for each other and for the people we serve.

On a bus tour, CEO Jason Janz shares about the history of redlining in Denver and how discriminatory practices like this have limited opportunities for our neighbors.

6. Benefits That Support Holistic Health

Our benefits go beyond the basics, from employer-covered healthcare and generous parental leave to a counseling stipend that encourages proactive mental health care. Financial health matters for our staff, too—with retirement matching, financial literacy resources, and a transparent, equity-based pay structure designed for fairness and long-term stability. Our benefits reflect our commitment to be a community that supports and invests in one another—because when our people are cared for and thriving, they are better equipped to live out our mission of helping our neighbors move from poverty to prosperity.

Being named a “Best Place to Work” means the most to us because it’s based on our staff rankings around leadership, benefits, and overall experience in the organization. Scoring 90 out of 100 tells us that our staff—who senior leaders value as their most important resource—are experiencing CrossPurpose as the place it’s intended to be: a community committed to loving one another and our neighbors in Denver, as we create Kingdom impact within our walls and throughout our city.
